MISSION AND VISION
Our mission is to advance understanding of how humanity affects animals and the environment at scale.
Our vision is a world where humans, animals, and ecosystems are able to flourish together.
We pursue this goal by conducting and supporting research, outreach, and—through our Food Impact Program—field-building activities.
Advancing environmental and animal protection in a world reshaped by human activity requires broad changes in values, governance, and technology.

annual reports

2024 CEAP Annual Report
In its sixth year, CEAP marked a leadership transition as Jeff Sebo began his first year as Director and thanked Founding Director Dale Jamieson for nearly two decades of institution-building and bridge-building at NYU. CEAP released a widely covered report on preventing zoonotic disease spillover and, with partners, published research on local infrastructure, climate policy, and conservation.

2023 CEAP Annual Report
In its fifth year, CEAP deepened its focus on animal agriculture. A live animal markets and zoonotic disease report with Harvard partners drew major media attention, while a scoping paper on pathways beyond meat advanced future publications. CEAP also released a major aquatic animal protection report and completed projects on plant-based meat history and improving medical and veterinary education.

2022 CEAP Annual Report
In its fourth year, CEAP continued to focus on animal agriculture and its implications for environmental and animal protection. Its two largest projects examined global pathways toward a world without meat and strategies for bending the curve of meat and dairy consumption in China. CEAP also supported research on COVID-19’s impacts on nonhumans, CAFO-free chicken production, and plant-based protein development.

2021 CEAP Annual Report
In its third year, CEAP continued to focus on animal agriculture and its links to environmental and animal protection. Its two largest projects examined global pathways toward a world without meat and strategies for bending the curve of meat and dairy consumption in China. CEAP also supported work on COVID-19’s impacts on nonhumans, CAFO-free chicken production, and plant-based protein development.

2020 CEAP Annual Report
In its second year, CEAP implemented a major focus on animal agriculture and its links to environmental and animal protection. CEAP advanced work on global pathways toward a world without meat and on bending the curve of meat and dairy consumption in China. Additional projects examined CAFO-free chicken production, centering animals in agriculture, alligator wrestling, and zoonotic disease prevention.

2019 CEAP Annual Report
Launched in 2018, the NYU Center for Environmental and Animal Protection conducts, supports, and disseminates research that advances protection for animals and the environment. CEAP emphasizes credible, evidence-based work that yields usable knowledge and policy recommendations, integrates environmental and animal protection issues, and fosters collaboration between scholars and changemakers.
