About CEAP

Mission and Vision

Environmental and animal protection are linked, though these connections were obscured in the late twentieth century when environmentalists focused on species conservation and animal advocates on animal research. Recently, as environmentalism shifted toward climate change and animal protection toward farmed and wild animal welfare, these movements have partially converged.

Advancing environmental and animal protection in a world reshaped by human activity requires broad changes in values, governance, and technology. We need research and policy that addresses how humans affect animals, public health, and the environment; how these global changes affect humans and nonhumans alike; and how new systems of governance can address these issues.

Research and policy on these issues must be integrative to be effective. We need work that addresses animal welfare, public health, and the environment; work that engages with the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences; and work that engages with researchers, companies, and governments at different scales, ranging from local governments to international communities.

Our mission is to advance understanding of how humanity affects animals and the environment at scale.

Our vision is a world where humans, animals, and ecosystems are able to flourish together.

We pursue this goal by conducting and supporting research, outreach, and—through our Food Impact Program—field-building activities.

Donation Information

CEAP launched in Fall 2018 with a $5,000,000 endowment supporting a permanent baseline annual budget of approximately $225,000. This budget funds our basic operations and research activities.

Our Food Impact Program (FIP) launched in Spring 2026 with a $3,750,000 donation supporting a 5-year runway. This budget funds research, outreach, and field building related to the future of food.

We gladly accept donations to our endowment and spend-down funds:

  • Our CEAP endowment fund is invested by the university, generating interest that supports our basic operations and research activities related to environmental and animal protection.
  • Our CEAP spend-down fund is spent directly by CEAP, allowing us to expand our operations and research activities beyond what our endowment interest alone can support.
  • Our FIP spend-down fund is spent directly by FIP, allowing us to expand our operations and research, outreach, and field building activities related to the future of food.

You can donate to these funds in two ways:

  • You can access the NYU donation portal and enter “Center for Environmental and Animal Protection” in the designation field to support the CEAP spend-down fund.
  • You can contact ceap@nyu.edu to discuss a gift for any of our funds. We can then connect you to the Development Office to sign a gift agreement and arrange a wire transfer.
